Toyota Dormobiles

Toyota HiAce Dormobile

Toyotas were not the most prolific choice as a base vehicle for a Martin Walter Dormobile conversion, but due to their reputation for reliability several Toyota Hi-Ace vans were converted for camper use.

Do you have a Toyota dormobile conversion, if so please let us know, send us your photos, stories and anything else you care to mention, and we will happily publish them here in our Readers Rides section where you can have your own dedicated web page all about your Dormobile. email us at: rides@dormobile-cars.com

Standard Atlas

standard atlas dormobile

The Standard Atlas Dormobile is again a very rare sight nowadays. Leyland inherited the Standard Atlas when it bought Standard-Triumph in 1960 and it went on to be the Leyland 15 and 20.

We have managed to obtain a picture of an early standard atlas van, but cannot yet source a picture of a dormobile conversion of one, but know they exist (or used to!).  If you have, or used to own a Standard Atlas Dormobile conversion we would be honoured if you would be so kind as to send us any photos or stories of the car. We will be delighted to give you your own page of our website in our readers rides section. You can contact us via email at: rides@dormobile-cars.com

Leyland Dormobiles

Leyland Sherpa Dormobile

Leyland had several of its vans available from Martin Walter Ltd with an official conversion. The first of these was the Leyland 20, which has not just a roof and interior conversion, but was also available with a complete ‘coach built’ redesigned body that sat on the Leyland 20 cab chassis, which was the Leyland Landcruiser.

Later models included the Leyland Sherpa, which was Leland’s answer to the popular Ford Transit van, and again was available with either the typical dormobile roof and interior conversion (pictured above courtesy of dormobile.org.uk) but also a full coach built body from Martin Walter on top of the cab chassis, moving the car towards what is deemed a Motor home rather than a traditional camper van.

If you have a Layland Dormobile conversion, we want to hear from you. email us with any pictures or tales of adventure you’ve had in your Dormobile and we will dedicate a page just for you in our readers rides section. contact us at: rides@dormobile-cars.com

Land Rover Dormobiles

Land Rover Dormobile

There is a place on the web already packed full of all the knowledge you could possibly want on Land Rover Dormobiles, on the Land Rover FAQ website LRFAQ.ORG, where John Hess has put together a fantastic site with what appears to be the whole world’s knowledge on the subject. So rather than try and repeat or copy any of it here we would rather point you in the right direction.

There is everything from the different types of conversions, all the available features, to adventures John has had in his own Land Rover Dormobile, and even copies of original Martin Walter brochures that make fascinating reading.

We highly recommend that you go and check it out, just follow this link: Land Rover Dormobiles at LRFAQ.org

Ford Dormobiles

Ford Transit Dormobile Conversion

Several Ford vans were made into Dormobile conversions by Martin Walter Ltd, The early Ford Thames, and of course the ubiquitous Ford Transit van (pictured above – image courtesy of dormobile.org.uk), but even the smaller Ford Escort van had an official conversion for it, but was built more for sleeping than as a full camper conversion.

If you have a Ford Dormobile conversion we would love to publish your pictures and stories of your travels with it her on a page dedicated just to you in our readers rides section. Please email us at: rides@dormobile-cars.com and your Dormobile will pictured on our website asap.
